How good do I need to be to join a ski instructor course

How Good Do You Need to Be to Join a Ski Instructor Course?

Becoming a ski instructor is a dream for many skiers, but one question comes up more than any other:

“How good do I need to be to join a ski instructor course?”

The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert skier before you start. A ski instructor course is designed to develop your skiing and teaching skills—you simply need a solid foundation and the motivation to improve.

Here’s what you need to know before applying.

Do You Need to Be an Expert Skier?

No.

You don’t need to ski like a professional racer or tackle every off-piste line on the mountain. However, you should already be a confident, controlled skier who is comfortable on red runs.

If you’re joining the Altitude Gap Course, this is the level we expect when you arrive. From there, our coaches will help you develop the technical skiing and teaching skills needed to achieve your BASI qualifications.

What Does “Confidently Skiing a Red Run” Mean?

Being comfortable on red runs means more than simply getting to the bottom of the slope.

You should be able to:

  • Ski red runs confidently in a variety of snow conditions.
  • Control your speed through your turns rather than relying on stopping.
  • Link parallel turns consistently.
  • Maintain good balance and posture.
  • Stay relaxed and in control throughout the day.

You don’t need perfect technique—that’s exactly what you’ll develop during the course—but you should already have the confidence to ski intermediate terrain comfortably.

Am I Ready for the Altitude Gap Course?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Can you ski red runs comfortably all day without losing confidence?
  • Are you happy skiing with parallel turns on most pistes?
  • Do you enjoy learning new skills and improving your technique?
  • Do you like helping others and sharing your enthusiasm for skiing?

If the answer is “yes” to most of these, you’re likely ready to begin your instructor journey.

As a general guide, most participants have around five weeks of skiing experience before joining the course. Some have skied since childhood, while others only discovered skiing as adults. Everyone progresses at a different pace, so the number of weeks is only a rough guideline.

Not Sure If You’re Ready?

If you’re unsure whether you’ve reached the required level, we’d be happy to help.

You can:

  • Send us a video of your skiing and we’ll give you honest feedback.
  • Meet one of our trainers during the summer at a UK snow dome or dry slope for a skiing assessment and coaching session.
  • Take a few technique-focused lessons to improve your parallel turns, confidence and control.
  • Join one of Altitude’s pre-gap training programmes to build the skills needed before the course begins.
  • Spend as much time skiing as possible with professional coaching to continue developing your technique.

Our goal is to help you arrive feeling confident and ready to get the most from the season.

Understanding the BASI Qualifications

During the Altitude Gap Course you’ll work towards your BASI Level 1 and BASI Level 2 qualifications.

BASI Level 1 Ski Instructor Course

BASI Level 1 is your first instructor qualification and allows you to teach in indoor snow centres, dry slopes and beginner areas within ski resorts.

Most Altitude Gap Course students complete this qualification during Weeks 2 or 3.

To be ready for the course, you should:

  • Be confident skiing red runs.
  • Link parallel turns consistently.
  • Ski with good balance and control.
  • Be enthusiastic about learning and coaching others.

Remember, Level 1 is designed to improve your skiing, so nobody expects you to arrive with perfect technique.

BASI Level 2 Ski Instructor Course

BASI Level 2 is the qualification that allows you to teach throughout most ski resorts.

The Level 2 assessment takes place during the final weeks of the programme, giving you months of coaching beforehand.

By the end of the season, you’ll be expected to:

  • Ski confidently on all groomed terrain, including red and black runs.
  • Adapt your skiing to different snow conditions.
  • Demonstrate stronger technical skills, including carving, short turns and varied turn shapes.
  • Teach safely and effectively while applying BASI teaching principles.

The purpose of the gap course is to help you progress from your arrival standard to this level.

What Happens Once You Join the Course?

Your season is about much more than passing exams.

Throughout the programme you’ll:

  • Improve your skiing with daily coaching from BASI trainers.
  • Learn how to teach skiers of different ages and abilities.
  • Develop your communication and leadership skills.
  • Build confidence in mountain safety and risk management.
  • Gain valuable experience teaching real clients.
  • Enjoy an unforgettable winter surrounded by like-minded people in Verbier.

Many students arrive wondering whether they’re good enough. By the end of the season they’re qualified instructors with a huge amount of skiing experience and memories that last a lifetime.
