21 July - Climbing Pollux 4092m

A last minute decision by Dom, Jon and Dre saw them arriving in Zermatt on the Monday evening to go and climb the Pollux. With a 5.45am wakeAscent of Pollux

up they were at the top of the lift system by 07.45, kitted up and ready for the 1.5 hour walk across the glacier to the foot of the Pollux. The climb was a long scramble up a rocky ridge which ended in a 50 m climb up vertical rock face to the final summit ridge. After a quick bite to eat on the top and the obligatory photos the route up was reversed.

The initial plan had been to take skis up and ski back down, but after talking to several of the mountain guides it was decided that the conditions were too icy on the 45-50 degree slope that lead back down to the glacier. After 2 hours of down climbing they were back on the glacier. The walk back in increasingly softening snow conditions was made more exciting by having to jump several crevasses as the snow bridges were collapsing. By the time the lift was reached it was 4.00pm and the weary but happy trio headed back to Verbier.
